German delegation, Yarmouk Water discuss cooperation on strategic water projects
Yarmouk Water Company CEO Ghislain Juvanon on Monday met with a high-level German delegation to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and support priority projects in the water and wastewater sectors.
The meeting was attended by Yarmouk Water Management Contract Director Ahmad Al Awamleh. The delegation included Laura Schnitler, Development Cooperation Representative at the German Embassy in Amman, and Nicolas von Kalm, Jordan Desk Officer at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as representatives from the German Development Bank (KfW), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).
Awamleh said the meeting was held under the directives of Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Al Saud, as part of efforts to strengthen coordination with international institutions and donor partners, particularly German institutions supporting Jordan’s water sector.
He added that the meeting aimed to mobilise support and direct funding towards priority projects that enhance the sustainability of water and wastewater services.
Awamleh briefed the delegation on the Yarmouk Water Company management contract, its expected outcomes and objectives, noting that it is aligned with Jordan’s Economic Modernisation Vision and the National Water Strategy 2023–2040.
The contract, he said, seeks to improve operational efficiency, reduce non-revenue water, enhance customer services, strengthen financial and institutional sustainability, and build the capacities of the company’s workforce through measurable performance indicators.
For his part, Juvanon outlined the main operational and institutional challenges facing Yarmouk Water Company, as well as areas requiring financing and investment, particularly infrastructure projects and the rehabilitation of water and wastewater systems.
He stressed the importance of directing support towards priorities that can improve operational efficiency and enhance the reliability and sustainability of services provided to citizens in the northern governorates.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of a 15-million-euro grant to support priority projects at the company, aimed at developing infrastructure, improving the efficiency of water and wastewater systems, and strengthening service sustainability.
Juvanon said the visit was important in strengthening partnerships with German institutions and opening new avenues for supporting strategic projects, noting that international cooperation is a key pillar in addressing water scarcity, developing infrastructure and improving operational efficiency.
Nicolas von Kalm, Jordan Desk Officer at BMZ, expressed his pleasure at visiting Yarmouk Water Company and taking part in the meeting, stressing the importance of direct dialogue and gaining a closer understanding of the company’s priorities and the challenges facing the water sector in northern Jordan.
Von Kalm said he was pleased to meet Ghislain Juvanon, expressing appreciation for the spirit of change and the development-oriented approach he witnessed during the meeting.
He voiced hope that these efforts would translate into tangible results that contribute to improving the company’s performance and enhancing the sustainability of water and wastewater services.
Von Kalm also underlined the importance of the visit in strengthening communication channels with Yarmouk Water Company and exploring areas of mutual cooperation with German institutions.
He said continued dialogue would help provide a deeper understanding of the company’s priorities and needs, and support future cooperation opportunities in projects with sustainable impact.
The visit comes as preparations continue for the Jordanian-German governmental talks, providing an opportunity to present Yarmouk Water Company’s priorities and needs directly to German institutions involved in development cooperation, financing and project implementation.
The delegation’s programme also included a field visit to the Wadi Al Arab Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Wadi Al Arab Hydropower Plant, where members were briefed on ongoing work related to groundwater management, water quality, sustainable sludge management and energy projects linked to the water sector See less
