The treated wastewater discharged from the purification plants is considered to be a non-conventional water resource, which contributes to filling the deficit and gap in the water budget.

The treated wastewater out of (10) active purification plants is an important resource for water resources, where the amount of treated water in 2018 amounted to about 17 million cubic meters..

In order to ensure that the quality of treated water comes out of the purification plants with the approved Jordanian standard specifications for different uses, Yarmouk Water Company works to improve the efficiency and rehabilitate the existing plants in a manner that ensures the reuse of treated water in agriculture and other non-household purposes.

Therefore, the main objective of the Reuse and Environment Directorate is to (achieve the optimum exploitation, security and economic exploitation of all reclaimed wastewater in the agricultural and industrial fields and to provide water for drinking purposes.

The functions of the reuse section: -

1. Responsibility for supervising and licensing agreements for the reuse of treated water for irrigation and other purposes according to the Jordanian standard.

2. Monitoring the quality of reclaimed water to ensure its integration with the Jordanian standard specifications, and its effect on the environment, soil and irrigated plants and implementation of extension and awareness programs.

3. Encouraging the recycling of industrial wastewater and applying environmental management systems and pollution protection program.

4. To Regulate and control the systems and sewage on industries to treat waste water discharged from the stations according to the acceptable standards before being disposed of or reused.

5. Follow-up pilot projects for the use of treated wastewater in some locations around the purification plants.

The treated wastewater is sold at a price of (40 fils / m3) according to the letter of the Prime Minister No. (57/11/1/26785) dated (5/6/2016), in addition to (10 fils / m3) as a contribution to the prices of electrical energy used in Pumping so that the total (50 fils / m 3).

The number of agreements with farmers reached about (117) agreement to irrigate more than 4000 dunums and use about (6) million cubic meters in irrigation of restricted crops as shown in the table below:

A project is being implemented to reuse treated wastewater from Wadi Al Arab Sewage Purification Plant, Irbid Central Purification Plant and Wadi Al Shalala Purification Plant for agriculture in the Jordan Valley, where the three plants are rehabilitated and upgraded and the appropriate treatment techniques are used to obtain the quality of reclaimed water in accordance with the Jordanian standard, and through this project, approximately 10 million cubic meters per year of treated wastewater from the above three plants will be secured for agriculture and will increase in the next ten years.
